Day Long Firing and Bombing,6 People Killed in Manipur
It is with deep sorrow that we report on the devastating events unfolding in Manipur, where six precious lives have been lost, and sixteen others left injured in a series of brutal mortar and gun attacks. The ongoing ethnic conflict in the state has escalated to a level of violence rarely seen before, leading to one of the darkest chapters in the history of these two tribes. The news of three innocent lives, including that of a father and his son, being taken in the pre-dawn hours inside their homes in the Kwakta region of Bishnupur district shook the entire nation. This heartbreaking incident became the tragic trigger for a relentless day-long onslaught of mortar and grenade attacks that showed no mercy.
Authorities have reason to suspect that the attackers had gained access to a substantial cache of stolen mortars, automatic and semi-automatic weapons, and other military equipment from the 2nd India Reserve Battalion HQ at Naranseina in Bishnupur district just days before the violence erupted. These assailants, with their deadly GF rifles and grenades, showed no hesitation in launching lethal assaults from a distance, causing even greater devastation and pain to the already suffering communities.
Among the victims were Yumnam Pishak Meitei (67), Yumnam Premkumar Meitei (39), and Yumnam Jiten Meitei (46), three brave individuals who had sought refuge in rescue camps but returned to their village on Friday in a valiant attempt to protect their homes. Tragically, their courage cost them their lives, further adding to the growing toll of casualties.
In another heart-wrenching incident at Terakhongsangbi, also in the Bishnupur district, one more life was lost, and three others, including a brave police commando, sustained gunshot wounds during a simultaneous attack.
The situation in Manipur remains tense and precarious, and the victims of this escalating violence are going through an unimaginable ordeal. With the theft of weapons from the Reserve Battalion HQ, it is now more critical than ever for authorities to address the root causes of this conflict and take decisive measures to prevent further bloodshed and suffering.
The tragic events unfolding in Manipur serve as a sombre reminder of the urgent need for peace and harmony in the region. The people of Manipur deserve to live in safety and tranquillity, free from the horrors of violence. To achieve this, it calls for a united and concerted effort from all parties involved to find a peaceful resolution and restore stability to the lives of those caught in the crossfire of this painful ethnic strife. Let us come together, prioritizing dialogue, empathy, and understanding, and work towards a future where peace prevails in Manipur, and the precious lives lost are not in vain.
